Fitter Welder

Fitter Welder Position Summary: The Fitter-Welder works with little or no instruction to perform a variety of welding processes and methods to weld all types of metals and alloys of various shapes, sizes, and thicknesses as needed for projects.

Lay out, fit, and fabricate metal components to assemble structural forms, such as machinery frames, bridge parts, and pressure vessels, using knowledge of welding techniques, metallurgy, and engineering requirements. Includes experimental welders who analyze engineering drawings and specifications to plan welding operations where procedural information is unavailable.

 

Duties and Responsibilities for Fitter Welder:

  • Use a variety of welding processes and methods to weld all types of metals to perform complete part fabrication in compliance with company quality standards.

  • Complete fit-up of structure, pipe, accessories, and tanks.

  • Specialized in fit-up, welding of the more challenging projects, and first-time projects.

  • Welds in flat, horizontal, and vertical positions.

  • Trains and mentors others.

  • Identify various metals and alloys such as mild & high strength steel, aluminium, and stainless, as well as identify structural shapes.

  • Use measuring devices and gauges to determine the thickness and size of metal.

  • Use oxygen/acetylene torch for cutting metals.

  • Use grinder and other hand or power tools required to grind, bevel, or fit metals together and remove slag.

  • Read and follow blueprints to determine the structure or fit of welded parts and compliance with the Method of Production Standard.

  • Maintained work area and equipment in a clean, orderly condition and followed prescribed safety procedures.

  • Knowledge of MOP and SWI.

  • May perform other duties as assigned.

 

Skills and Specifications for Fitter Welder:

  • Must have the expertise and knowledge of welding procedures, symbols, and techniques required to weld and fuse metals.

  • Skilled ability to use hand and power tools associated with welding, such as chipping hammer, grinder, arc welder, and oxygen/acetylene torch, including setup or connection of hoses, cords, and regulators.

  • Must have the ability to read and comprehend blueprints and sketches.

  • Use standard measuring instruments and hand tools such as tape, level, square, file, or rasp.

  • He has demonstrated leadership skills.

  • Solid problem-solving skills.

  • Must have the ability to contribute and work in a team environment.

  • Must ability to demonstrate accuracy and thoroughness to ensure first quality of work.

  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain healthy working relationships with people in the course of work.

  • Must have the willingness to work additional hours to meet tight deadlines.

  • Must have the ability to operate a forklift safely.

Education and Qualifications for Fitter Welder:

  • At least a High School diploma or equivalent (TAFE).

  • Certification from a trade or equivalent (TAFE) or welding institute is preferred.

  • Must demonstrate welding proficiencies through Visual & Fillet break or Radiography testing and successfully perform Flux Core, Sub Arc, Tungsten Inert Gas or Gas Metal Arc welds in 1 through 6 Groove positions and welds in the 1 through 2 Fillet positions.

 

Physical Requirements for Fitter Welder:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continually required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch.

  • The employee is occasionally required to crawl, talk or hear; taste or smell.

  • The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 20 kg. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, colour vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

Work Environment for Fitter Welder:

  • The hazard of the job: while on duty is exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold and heat.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
